Carolina España underlines the importance of collaboration between administrations in attracting the project to the community
Málaga has been chosen by IMEC as the Spanish city to host its second manufacturing and R&D center in Europe. Thus, the center will be the only one of its kind outside of Leuven, Belgium, where IMEC’s main headquarters are located. IMEC is a globally recognized technological center specializing in research, design, and prototyping of semiconductors and microelectronics. The establishment of these strategic facilities in Andalusia is the result of extensive efforts by the Junta de Andalucía, through the Ministry of Economy, Finance, and European Funds, and close collaboration between the central government, the Junta de Andalucía, and the City Council.
The Minister of Economy, Finance, and European Funds, Carolina España, who is also the president of Málaga TechPark where the research center will be located, states, “Málaga and the entire Andalusia region are in luck with this great news, a result of discreet work that has been ongoing for months.” The minister emphasizes that the project will be made possible through the financial support of the Junta de Andalucía, which recognizes the importance of attracting such initiatives to Andalusia. She also says, “The arrival of IMEC in Spain and Málaga will have a highly significant impact on the innovation ecosystem of our country and our Autonomous Community.” She adds, “Their presence in Málaga will facilitate the transfer of cutting-edge knowledge and technology in the field of semiconductors, promote collaboration with local companies and startups, drive innovation and entrepreneurship in our country, and decisively boost education and research in the field of semiconductors.”
The minister points out that the establishment of IMEC in Andalusia and in Málaga will not only boost the development of the entire value chain of the semiconductor industry in Spain and Andalusia but will also generate a pulling and multiplying effect on the microelectronics ecosystem in Spain, our Autonomous Community, and our city.
IMEC Fab 5 anticipates the creation of 450 highly qualified jobs in Málaga (direct employment). The IMEC facility at Málaga TechPark will be raised within the first phase of the park’s expansion, in zone SUP-CA.10. East. The project envisions approximately 32,000 square meters of buildable space on a plot of 46,000 square meters.
These strategic facilities will be established in Andalusia as a result of collaboration between the Junta de Andalucía, through the Ministry of Economy, Finance, and European Funds, the strategic PERTE Chip project designed by the government to position Spain at the forefront of the European microelectronics and semiconductor industry, and the City Council.
Last July, Spain and IMEC signed a letter of intent for the world-renowned microelectronics institute to establish its second semiconductor R&D center in the country.
After months of intense collaboration between various administrations and IMEC, the Belgian center has chosen Málaga.
