The University of Málaga and Málaga TechPark cooperate with this initiative
The School of Computer Science and Engineering of the University of Málaga has hosted a new edition of Oracle4Girls, an initiative to increase girls’ interest in science. Its third edition had the participation of 150 girls, 50 more than the previous two editions. Thus, more than 300 girls have taken part in this event since it was launched in 2022.
This event has been promoted once again by the University of Málaga, Málaga TechPark, Campus Tech Chicas, Oracle Academy, IngenieraSoy, and the Oracle Women’s Leadership Málaga program.
During the event, the University of Málaga and Oracle talked about several issues to provide the parents of the participating girls with an overview of the current situation in the technology sector, the career opportunities, the “Málaga Valley” ecosystem, and, above all, to encourage and foster a technological spirit in their daughters.
This motivational talk featured Manuel Enciso, Director of the School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Málaga, Sofia Schneider, Director of the Oracle Málaga Office and Cloud Systems Sales Leader, as well as Marta Tolosa, Solutions Engineer and Cloud Architect at Oracle.
Meanwhile, the girls were able to participate in diverse workshops, divided according to age (between 6 and 16 years old), in which they experienced firsthand what it means to pursue an academic and professional career in science and technology (specifically in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, also known as STEM).
In the workshops, the instructors guided all participants through their first steps in programming, ranging from developing programmable music to participating in the creation of a video game, or even interacting with artificial intelligence. These activities were an approach to the day-to-day aspects of these careers so they could experience what their professional life would be like in the future.
This initiative seeks to increase the presence of women in STEM careers so that, ultimately, it reflects equity in technology-related professions. At the local level, it is worth mentioning that Oracle promotes various initiatives to improve diversity and also that 33% of its employees in its Málaga office are females.
